As you study all the Bible says about heaven, there may be terms you are unfamiliar with, or simply need a refresher on. This list was created for exactly that reason—reference this “glossary of terms” as needed to aid in your study of heaven.
Abraham’s bosom
An intermediate heaven (Paradise), a place filled with Old Testament heroes before Jesus relocated Paradise and took them to the third heaven.

Age of Accountability
The Bible does not mention a specific age when children are old enough to comprehend the Gospel and to be accountable for rejecting it.
Blotted Out
The Lamb’s (Jesus’) Book of Life contains the names of every person born into the world. But if a person dies having rejected God’s offer of salvation, his name is blotted out of the Book of Life.

Crystal River
A beautiful river in the New Jerusalem, clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God.

Eternity
A place in the hearts of men and women. A place of transcendence, of everlasting duration, of permanence. A place beyond time.

Hades
An intermediate hell where the unrighteous dead experience fire and torment until the Great White Throne Judgment.

Heaven
A literal place prepared by Christ for a prepared people, which the Bible also calls the third heaven.

The Bible also refers to the first heaven (the sky with clouds and birds—Isaiah 55:10-11) and the second heaven (the universe with its stars and galaxies—Genesis 1:14-17; Psalm 19:1; Matthew 24:29).
Intermediate Heaven
The place where every believer who died prior to the Ascension of Christ went (also called Paradise). After Jesus died on the cross and before He rose, He went to intermediate heaven and brought the righteous dead into the presence of God.

Intermediate Hell
The place (Hades) where an unbeliever’s spirit and soul resides until they are consigned to hell at the Great White Throne Judgment.

Judgment Seat of Christ
All who trust Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior will stand before Him in heaven to be judged and rewarded.

Lamb’s Book of Life
Jesus’ book containing the names of all those who will be in heaven.

Lake of Fire
Hell. The timeless realm of separation from God where those who reject salvation will experience eternal torment.

Marriage Supper of the Lamb
A joyous celebration of the marriage of Christ and his bride, the Church, as described in the apostle John’s vision in the book of Revelation.

Millennium
After Armageddon, Christ and His followers will rule the earth in peace and righteousness from His capital in Jerusalem for ten centuries.

New Heaven and New Earth
Once the Lord purifies the earth, the present heaven and earth will pass away and God will restore the world, dwelling with His people in perfect harmony forever, in a new heaven and new earth.

New Jerusalem
Once the Lord purifies the earth, a city of indescribable beauty will descend from heaven. This Holy City will serve as the seat of Christ’s authority and majesty for all eternity.

Paradise
The intermediate heaven where every believer who died prior to the Ascension of Christ went. Also known as Abraham’s bosom.

Pearly Gates
Gates meant to convey the precious beauty of the New Jerusalem, with each gate brilliantly crafted from a single pearl.

Place of the Dead
Also called “Sheol,” this is a temporary place of waiting for the souls and spirits of those who perish on Earth, divided into two sections with a “great gulf fixed” between both sections

Purgatory
The Bible says nothing about Purgatory. After death, unbelievers go to Hades (intermediate hell) where no eternal destination can be reversed.

Rewards/Crowns
The Bible lists at least five crowns that believers will receive in heaven: 1) Victor’s Crown, 2) Crown of Rejoicing, 3) Crown of Righteousness, 4) Crown of Life, 5) Crown of Glory.
The Lord Himself is our exceedingly great reward.

River of Life
A beautiful river in the New Jerusalem, clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God.

Second Heaven
The vast universe in which we live, filled with billions of stars, planets, meteors, and galaxies.

Streets of Gold
Streets of the New Jerusalem composed of solid gold paving stones, which are like clear glass or like a polished mirror.

Third Heaven
The dwelling place of God, where we will one day join Christ. Also called the highest heaven and the heaven of heavens.

Throne of God
The throne in the New Jerusalem of God’s sovereign rule over the new heaven and the new earth.

Tree of Life
The New Jerusalem will contain multiple trees of life on each side of the river of life. The leaves of the trees will bring a greater sense of well-being to those who have already been made perfectly holy.
