How Do You Get to Heaven?

God made clear in His Word that every single human being living today has been separated from Him through the corruption of sin. Paul told us in the book of Romans, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (3:23). That same book declares, “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (6:23). The word “death” in that passage refers not only to the end of our physical lives, but also to a spiritual separation from God that is eternal. The “death” of our spiritual selves leads to hell.

In short, God is holy but we are sinful. Therefore, we have no hope of heaven on our own.

But don’t stop there! We don’t have to make it on our own! No, God desires a relationship with us. God desires a relationship with you. For that reason, He made a way for our sins to be forgiven and our relationship with Him to be restored.

Jesus is that way. As God in human form, Jesus came to our world and lived a perfect life. In His perfection, He offered Himself as a sacrifice for all people by dying on the cross. Through His blood, He paid the penalty for our sins. The Bible tells us that “He personally carried our sins in his body on the cross so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. By his wounds you are healed” (1 Peter 2:24 NLT).

God desires a relationship with you. For that reason, He made a way for our sins to be forgiven and our relationship with Him to be restored.

Because of Jesus, you have a free, guaranteed ticket to heaven. He has offered it to you, and all you need to do is accept that offer through faith. Scripture says, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8–9 NIV).

Right now you may be thinking, Dr. Jeremiah, I believe I accepted that gift. I think so. But how can I be sure?

The answer, again, comes from God’s Word. Look at these two incredible promises:

  • “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

  • “If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9).

Whoever believes in Jesus will be saved. There is no doubt in that promise. No wiggle room. And, even more practically, we can be confident of our salvation simply by confessing with our mouth and believing in our heart. That’s all it takes. When you take those two steps, “you will be saved.”

There is no doubt in that promise.

That’s something you can do right now. Right this moment. If there is any doubt in your heart about your name being written in the Lamb’s Book of Life, take a moment to kneel down or bow your head. Speak to Jesus from your heart, and confess these words with your mouth:

Lord Jesus, I trust You have offered me a place in heaven. I trust You have offered me eternal life—and I accept that gift. Right now I choose to believe in my heart that You died on the cross for my sins and were raised from the dead, and I confess with my mouth that You are Lord. You are Lord of my life. I confess that I have sinned against You throughout my life, and right now I repent of every one of those sins. I accept Your forgiveness for every single sin.

I speak this prayer in Your name, Lord Jesus. Amen.

You may not believe this, but I have been praying for you to make that decision—to claim that promise as your own. I want you to go to heaven—to be sure of your eternal salvation. That way we can meet up one day along the streets of gold within New Jerusalem and talk together about all the wonders we’ve experienced and all the wonders that still await us in that perfect place. That eternal home.

I look forward to seeing you there!
